To lower the piston, the fluid is drained from the top of the piston. As the fluid is drained, the pressure on top of the piston decreases, and the piston moves downwards due to its own weight and the weight of the elevator cab.

The speed of hydraulic elevator pistons is controlled by the flow rate of the pump. The faster the pump pumps fluid, the faster the piston moves, and the faster the elevator cab moves.
